“Hawthorn” – playing the 8th hole

There are three decks on this green, separated by quite sharp inclines, so getting the ball on the right level is crucial.

It plays much the easiest with a back-right flag, as the far bank will throw the ball back for you. For a front flag, the safe shot may be to drop on the ramp and putt up the slope, and with the flag on the left-hand mezzanine you just have to be stupidly accurate with your range to have any chance. Missing short and right is always bad news here, and can leave you facing 5 or worse with a front flag.
